El Dorado becomes ‘Rafiki’s’ godparent and, together with the Jaime Duque Foundation, will promote the protection of condors in Colombia
  • In July 2024, thanks to a process of scientific research and artificial incubation, ‘Rafiki’ was born.
OPAIN, the operator of El Dorado International Airport, will be its godparent and will launch a comprehensive strategy to inspire both Colombians and international visitors to become guardians of wildlife.
  • The Andean Condor is considered Colombia’s national bird and appears on the country’s coat of arms, symbolizing national pride, power, and freedom.

Bogotá D.C., June 17, 2025. In a milestone for the conservation of Colombian wildlife and biodiversity, OPAIN and the Jaime Duque Park Foundation (FPJD) have become allies with the shared goal of protecting the majestic Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus) in its natural habitat. This strategic agreement reflects the commitment of both organizations to raise awareness about this endangered species—currently estimated to have a population of only 150 individuals—the threats it faces, and the critical actions needed for its survival. The strategy will be built on three pillars:

  • Communications: Development of campaigns and informational materials about the Andean Condor, including the dangers it faces—such as illegal hunting and the use of agrochemicals—and its essential role in ecosystem health. These materials will be distributed through El Dorado Airport's various communication channels.

  • Awareness: Educational sessions at El Dorado Airport to promote care and protection of biodiversity among visitors, travelers, and the airport community.

  • Interinstitutional Coordination: Participation of OPAIN employees through environmental and social volunteer activities in natural reserves to strengthen the support network for the Andean Condor conservation program.

For OPAIN, this collaboration with a conservation-focused entity like the Jaime Duque Park Foundation sets a meaningful precedent for shared social responsibility in protecting Colombia’s natural heritage. It also complements our ongoing efforts to maintain a sustainable operation—making efficient use of natural resources, reducing CO₂ emissions, and contributing to environmental decontamination.

According to Rafael Torres, Manager of the Jaime Duque Park Foundation: “These are significant and purpose-driven partnerships. ‘We fly together for conservation’ is the name of the campaign we’re launching today, but the real message is that it’s not just El Dorado and the Jaime Duque Foundation uniting behind this cause—it’s the entire country. By understanding the challenges these species face, we can spark interest and take specific actions to preserve biodiversity and coexist in harmony with nature.”

Additionally, this Memorandum of Understanding, initially valid for one year, outlines the commitment to ensure the care and maintenance of the 1,000 trees that OPAIN has planted in areas under the stewardship of the Jaime Duque Park Foundation. This initiative is part of an integrated environmental conservation strategy and aligns with OPAIN’s sustainability program.

This alliance marks a decisive step toward protecting an emblematic species and serves as a call to collective action for the conservation of Colombia’s invaluable natural heritage—engaging the more than 45 million passengers who travel through El Dorado International Airport annually, as well as the general public.

The campaign will be visible at El Dorado Airport starting June 17, 2025.
